For the first time in more than 50 years, humans are preparing to travel beyond low Earth orbit again. That mission is the Artemis 2 mission, and it could be one of the most important spaceflights of our generation.

What Is the Artemis 2 Mission?

At its core, the Artemis 2 mission is simple: send four astronauts around the Moon and bring them safely back to Earth.

But the mission’s importance goes far beyond a lunar flyby. This is the first crewed mission beyond low Earth orbit since Apollo 17. That’s over five decades without humans traveling this far from Earth.

Artemis 2 follows the successful uncrewed Artemis I mission, which tested NASA’s systems in deep space. Now, astronauts will climb aboard the Orion spacecraft and put those systems to the ultimate test.

Artemis 2 Launch Date

NASA is currently targeting 2025 for the Artemis 2 launch. The mission will lift off from the historic Kennedy Space Center in Florida aboard the Space Launch System (SLS), the most powerful rocket NASA has ever built.

This crew is historic for multiple reasons:

Christina Koch will be the first woman to travel to the Moon.
Victor Glover will be the first Black astronaut assigned to a lunar mission.
Jeremy Hansen represents the Canadian Space Agency for Artemis III
